Standard or Ultimate: what a pre-order actually buys

Updated6 min read2 sources

A pre-order solves exactly one problem: you get the game on day one. Everything else is a matter of taste.

Pricing and editions

Pre-orders for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S opened in the summer of 2026. According to press reports, the pricing is:

  • Standard Edition — $79.99
  • Ultimate Edition — $99.99

Regional pricing differs and storefronts do not always agree, so check [YOUR LOCAL PRICE] in your own store rather than converting from dollars.

What Ultimate adds

At Rockstar the difference between editions traditionally sits around the game rather than inside it: in-game bonuses, cosmetics, boosts for the online side. The single-player campaign is identical in both — there is no reason to pay more for “the full story”, because the story is already full.

No GTA edition has ever sold a slice of the campaign separately. Worth remembering when you compare the prices.

Rockstar lists the exact contents on the pre-order page, and they can change before release. If the bonuses are tied to the online mode and you have no plans to play it, the premium stops making sense.

Is a pre-order worth it

The case for: demand will be high on day one, and a digital copy removes queues and logistics from the equation.

The case against: 19 November 2026 is still some way off, nobody has reviews yet, and refunds follow whatever rules your storefront happens to have. A pre-order makes sense if you were going to buy at launch anyway — and does not if you are still undecided.

One thing worth avoiding outright: buying keys from resellers ahead of release. For a game this size, that is the most obvious setup for a scam.
